The regular, daily cleaning can keep the boards looking as new for decades and can help avoid some common issues PVC boards usually face, including discoloration of surfaces, loss of surface smoothness and premature ageing of the boards. Here are some simple tips for prolonging the life of your PVC boards!
Daily and Weekly Cleaning Routines
The easiest method of protecting PVC boards is regular cleaning. If you need to do a maintenance job, use a soft microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge, warm water and mild dish soap. This soft method will not harm the surface when removing dust, light dirt and fingerprints.
Once a week is usually sufficient on a kitchen or on other areas on a wall. Bathroom panels will need limescale removing after every shower to prevent build-up of limescale and to prevent mould. Make sure to wipe over the surface of whatever you are cleaning with a dry cloth to remove watermarks, to help it shine and become water resistant for the following few washes.Consistency is key: quick care today means intensive cleaning is not required later.
Removing Stubborn Stains Safely
PVC boards will hold up to most stains, however, they may not be so easy in the kitchen or in high traffic areas. Mild degreasing cleaners and vinegar (dilute the solution by 50% with water). Apply it on the stained area and rub with soft cloths.
For dried or sticky food stains, apply a baking soda paste, then wipe it off gently to remove the stain. To remove ink or marker stains, apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to a cloth (be sure to test first on an inconspicuous spot to make sure it won't damage the surface).
Testing in an inconspicuous area is a good precaution for any cleaning product! Some manufacturers have specialty cleaners for PVC materials if stains do persist.
What to Avoid When Cleaning PVC Boards
It's important to understand what not to use to protect PVC boards. Don't use abrasive cleaners, scrubbers or steel wool as doing so will scratch the surface. Do not use abrasive chemicals such as bleach, acetone, ammonia and harsh solvents on the surface as this could result in discoloration or damage.
Avoid using high pressure washers near the surface as they can harm the surface. Don't let the cleaners linger on the surface too long - it can lead to staining or discoloration. When in doubt, try the product on a small, inconspicuous area first and then apply to the surface.
Protecting Against Environmental Damage
It is known that PVC products can be adversely affected by exposure to UV. Colors may fade over time when exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Use UV resistant coatings or paints to protect boards if they are to be used outdoors or in sunny conditions. Furniture placement away from direct sunlight or window coverings can help.
The other factor is heat. PVCs do not tolerate high temperatures, so never place hot items on the PVC surface, as this can warp or discolor the surface. Wrap hot food with trivets or pads and never slide heavy or sharp objects across the counter surface.
Regular Inspection and Prompt Repairs
By inspecting them periodically, you can identify minor issues before they become major issues. Inspect for any cracks, peeling or scratches and fix them early. PVC repair kits or PVC material appropriate adhesives can be used for mild scratches or small cracks based on manufacturer's instructions.
Proper storage is essential as well. Avoid direct sunlight, excessive heat and cold, in addition to moisture exposure, in the off-season and the rest of the year as you need it. They will remain beautiful and perform well for their entire lifecycle.
