Choosing PVC foam board density for construction Choosing your construction project PVC foam board density impacts wide range of your construction elements, from structural strength to fabrication and long term application. Density is measured in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³), more dense boards offer more strength but can be weight, expense, less dense offer less strength but are also cheaper to manufacture. JIAYING (PLUSWIN) will support your decision with 19 years know-how as producer of all FREE blowing, free foam and celuka and co-extrusion and Free/celuka combined products.
What Is PVC Foam Board Density and Why Does It Matter?
Density is the proportion between the mass and the volume of any given object. In PVC foam board the foam degree and the source material are main factor which determines its density. The range includes 0.30-0.40 g/cm³ for the low density,0.60-0.70 g/cm³ and even much higher is possible. Among the parameters this is the key parameters determining the mechanical and application performance of the board.
Less dense boards are easier to handle and cheaper but are less rigid, less resistant to impact, and less able to hold screw. Denser boards are strong, durable, resistant to moisture and impact but also heavier and more expensive. Ensure you only get the strength you require and nothing more. For board that you wish to machine/print or route, consistent sheet density across your board is ideal for reproducible results.
Matching Density to Your Construction Application
In construction there are lots of varying requirements based on usage. You'll want to identify the range that best suits your needs.
High-density boards (0.55–0.70 g/cm³): This grade has very high strength and durability. Is suitable for high load application, constructional members, exterior projects and use in the application subjected to heavy usage and impact. High density gives good strength for screw holding and it is ideal for cabinetry, Furniture and signage that need to hold heavy load.
Medium-density boards (0.45–0.55 g/cm³): Medium density Boards These are very versatile and represent the highest volume boards supplied for most general purpose construction projects. Our medium density boards offer an optimal mix of weight, strength and workability making them ideal for interior wall cladding, partitions, exhibition stand builders and more. The board is easy to machine and offers very satisfactory hold for screws and more for most general purposes. Where an element of price economy balanced with performance is of interest, this would appear to be the obvious board.
Low-density boards (0.30–0.44 g/cm³): For furniture design Low-density boards are a lightweight, affordable choice which works best for decorative and non-structural uses where strength is less important, like temporary fixtures, light signage, and places that are prone to only light physical stress.
How JIAYING (PLUSWIN) Achieves Superior Density Control
Drawing upon 19 years of experience in manufacturing processes, JIAYING (PLUSWIN) has achieved expertise in density control processes including free foam, celuka and co-extrusion processes that yield PVC foam board with controlled profile density. As one of them, the Celuka method provides the optimum of efficiency by means of generating cell structure internally, while achieving uniformly smooth high-density skin.
We utilize virgin PVC resin of good quality and avoid using the recycle grade to control the density value steadily, the recycle materials have lot of impurities in their compositions, which cause the foams not uniformly even and the densities also not evenly the same value during the extrusion, meanwhile it is two-stage of process, rapid mixing plus low speed cooling processing can provide very efficient blending process. We have continuous in-line measurement, which keeps the temperature during the process controlled exactly between 160℃ - 190℃ to ensure the perfect foaming process, and we do possess ISO 9001, ISO14001, and OHSAS 18001 certification for stable production of products range.
Practical Verification Before Bulk Orders
In pre-bulk sample, assess sample consistency, ask for samples of what you want to have to ensure density is uniform throughout. Check for cross-section cells, spot or grain with color or texture difference usually means density difference. Test weight per square foot by taking a few different weight measurements-this should be similar throughout all areas tested. Any variance in weight per-area measurement might mean uneven density, which would affect fabrication.
For planned CNC route/print/laminate board, cut a few pieces for testing. High quality manufactured boards with density uniformity should provide nice edges without crumbling and limited fuzz (unless you print/laminate the board then the result depends on your process!). For building structure, Test screw pull out strength and ensure the board meets the structural property you need.
